Shifting,
how long?
By: Cyrell Laban
With the total student population of 2,584 and 85 teachers,
staff and administrator, IMNHS resorted to undertake shifting of classes this
school year, 2013 – 2014. This is due to
increase in enrolment this year and the lack of classrooms.
Grade 7 and Grade 8 students took their classes in the
morning shift, from 5:00 am – 11:45 am, while the third year and fourth year
students took the afternoon shift, from 11:45 – 7:00 pm. Not all sections of each year level could be
given individual room, that’s why two year levels would have to share the same
room. This is because of the on-going
construction of building and the plotting of 1-45 teacher-student ratio.
Is this shifting a burden to the students? Based on a campus survey conducted recently,
only about 20% of the respondents said that they want the old schedule back.
It’s not a surprise if the students respond that way. Come to think of it, the present scheme is
more convenient than the old one. Even
though the students in the morning shift have to take their classes quite
early, they still have plenty of time in the afternoon to do their school works
and still enjoy the afternoon.
On the other hand, the students in the afternoon session
have to go home a little late, but they still have plenty of time doing their
home and school chores in the morning before going to school.
We are still wondering, how long would the shifting of
classes last? But no matter how long
would it take, our students would be dealing with lots of adjustments, but one
thing is sure, we will adopt and we can survive.
