DepEd opens hotlines for school opening concerns, complaints

School opening concerns and complaints from students and parents may be sent directly to the Department of Education central offices via two landlines and one mobile phone line, the DepEd said in separate messages sent out via Twitter.

The landline hotlines are (02) 636-1663 and (02) 633-1942.  The DepEd's mobile number hotline is (63) 919-456-0027.

According to the DepEd, students in the public elementary schools and public high schools may be enrolled earlier than the opening day of the school year. In fact, there are designated early registration days meant to help parents and students avoid the school opening rush. The last designated early registration day was on January 28.

But many parents and students still choose to wait until school opening week to enroll. This year, school opening for the public grade schools and high schools is on June 2.

Complaints that usually arise before and during school opening day are about the collection of payments for some fees.

The DepEd bans the collection of fees on school opening day.

There are some authorized school fees which may be collected from students in Grade 5, Grade 6 and in high school, but these may be collected in the month of August and succeeding months and payment of the authorized fees is voluntary.

The authorized voluntary fees are those for the Boys Scouts, Girl Scouts, Red Cross, Anti-TB drive, the Parents-Teachers Association, the school publication, and membership fees for students' clubs.

The school year this year runs for 201 school days from June 2, 2014 to March 27, 2015.

DepEd policy does not require school uniforms for public school students.

It is also DepEd policy that school ID cards of public school students shall be free. The cost of producing school IDs shall be charged against the maintenance and operating budget of the school.

The enrollment age for Grade 1 is six years old. The birth certificate of the student is the document required for proof of age, especially for first-time enrollees.

Transferee students from other school are required to present their report card from their former school.   Joel Locsin/ELR, GMA News
